Advanced Studies Leadership Program

(located at the Mass Maritime)

Program Objective:  To provide a 3-week summer college like residential experience that emphasizes leadership and development and project oriented instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM)  areas and the humanities for high achieving students from the Cape Cod Collaborative member districts.

Dates: June 29, 2008 to July 18, 2008
           (Summer 2008)
Students:  The program will serve approximately 75 current 7th graders (8th graders as of Sept. 08) and 75 current 8th graders (9th graders as of Sept. 08).

Selection of Students:  Approximately 150 students will participate in the program on the basis of most recent MCAS scores.  Student scores must fall within the top 10% of their grade level.  In additional the following criteria will also be considered:
     1.  Past academic achievement
     2.  Interest in subject area
     3.  Current teacher recommendations (2)
     4.  Guidance Counselor/or Principal recommendation.

Cost per Student:  The charge per student will be $940 for the 3 week residential experience.  A $60 application fee will be the only additional charge. 

Scholarships:  A limited amount of funding is available for those meeting ASLP financial needs guidelines.  Except for very unique circumstances the maximum financial scholarship will be $250.  Districts may supplement their own students' tuitions.

Seats Available per District:  Proposed # of student seats per district-Barnstable (19), Bourne (11), Chatham (4), D/Y (16), Falmouth (15), Harwich (6), Martha's Vineyard REg. H.S. (10), Mashpee (7), Nantucket (5), Nauset (8), North River Collaborative Districts (18),  P-Town (3), Sandwich (14), Wareham (14).  Students who rescind their agreement to attend the program will be replaced by students from the district's waiting list.  Non-member districts may be allowed seats if available. 

Application:  Application materials are available at the principal/guidance office within member schools.  Applications will only be accepted from the principal/guidance counselor at the member district.

Curriculum:  Each student will enroll in a 3 module Science/Technology/Engineering/Math Course (STEM Course).  Students participate in 4 day modules (3 hours each day) of exciting hands-on study which will include demonstrations and interactive work with world class technology and state-of-the-art science labs. "Imagination and Innovation with Power Engineering", "Navigation and Seamanship", "Use of Remotely Operated Vehicles in Oceanography", "Aquaculture", "Coastal Process of Cape Cod" and "Marine Environmental Problems on Cape Cod" will be the topical areas (tentative) explored within each module.

Each student will elect one Humanities course (75 min. per day) to be selected from this tentative list of courses:  "Improve with Improv", "Painting and Drawing", "Creative Writing: Yearbook Development", and "Critics Corner". 

Tuition Fees and Refund Policy:  Within ten (10) days of acceptance, a deposit of $200.00 is required (check to be made out to Cape Cod Collaborative). Should a student withdraw from the ASLP after acceptance, yet before May 16, 2008, $100.00 of this deposit is non-refundable (note: this is a change from previous information) Should the student withdraw from the program after June 1, 2008, yet before the start of the Program on July 1st, 2008, the entire payment of $200.00 will be non-refundable.

All parent balances are to be paid in full by May 30th, 2008.  Tuition payments (checks to be made payable to Cape Cod Collaborative) should be mailed to 5700 LeMay Avenue, Otis ANGB, MA 02542.

Should a student withdraw from the program after it has started, yet before it is completed, the following schedule of refunds will apply. Exclusive of the non-refundable $200.00 deposit, the refund will be computed as follows: if the student leaves during the first week of the program, a refund of 50% of the parental payment (exclusive of the $200.00 deposit) will be refunded.  No refunds will be made after the close of the first week of the program. Financial aid is available for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch. A financial aid form is available at your guidance/principal's office.
