Through reading and discussion of the text Response to Intervention: Principles and Stretegies for Effictive Practice (authors RAchel Brown-Chidsy and Mark W. Steege), the candidates will learn the history of the initiative; its design and procedures; the role of scientfically-based curriculum; the use of evidence-based interventions; and technology's potential in the planning and implementation of RTI. Candidates will also have the opportunity to take the knowledge gained through the readings and discussions and apply it to RTI in their own setting whether it is classroom, resource room, or in "specialists" teaching groups.

Through technology, both skills and content can be presented in ways impossible for the textbook-only classroom. In Technology and Social Studies, students will experience the many uses of instructional technology including simulations, databases, desktop publishing, presentations, and interactive multimedia. An appropriate infusion of technology in social studies, following the NCSS’s Technology Position Statement and Guidelines, will be discussed and applied to district curriculum. Technology-enhanced experiences will address both the social studies standards and the technology standards. Berson, technology-based K-12 social studies lesson plans will be studied and used as models. Students will access digital archives; create PowerPoint presentations that aid instruction of a particular social studies lesson; generate spreadsheets that help illustrate significant social studies statistical data; use the Internet to explore multiple perspectives and contexts beyond the textbook; enhance citizenship education by encouraging inquiry, perspective taking and meaning making; and select and evaluate various social studies software.
