Visual Strategies Workshop:  Working with Autism and Related Communication and Behavior Challenges.

A video workshop training series (5 videos)

COST:        $25.00 for the 3 sessions

 

Workshop Description:

This is a 5-part video series with accompanying hand-outs, activities, and discussion.  Participation in all sessions is encouraged for better understanding.  It is geared toward Autism Spectrum Disorders, but others dealing with communication and behavior issues related to students with special needs will find valuable strategies as well.

Week 1:  Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders and Communication

Week 2:  Informally Assessing Communication:  Students, Partners and Environments and 

    Samples and Examples of Visual Strategies

Week 3:  More Samples & Examples of Visual Strategies; Visual Strategies at Home:  Parent Interview              and How to Create Visual Tools; Potpourri of Questions

The intended outcomes for this video series:

o       To identify significant factors in student/child learning & functioning style that affect communication

o       Informally assess a student’s/child’s communication strengths & challenges

o       Recognize specific situations where communication breakdowns can affect student/child understanding, behavior and participation

o       Develop visual tools and supports to facilitate the student’s/child’s reliable and consistent receptive communication

o       Create and use specific visual supports that have significantly improved student/child communication, behavior and participation

Intended Audience:  Teachers, Paraprofessionals, Therapists, and any interested party looking for a basic understanding how visual strategies can support communication skills.

The Center for Professional Development is pleased to announce its Summer 2007 In-Service and activity schedule  (please click course/seminar schedule).  The Center has served the needs of approximately 1000 staff participants during the 2006-2007 school year.  Listed below are the objectives for the 2007-2008 school year.

Year Three (2007-2008) Objectives

Develop website for Collaborative Professional Development Center

  • Publicize full description of courses offered at district level
  • Publicize full description of  courses offered by Collaborative
  • Publicize full description of credit, PDP, and contact hour arrangements
  • Develop on-line registration for district and Collaborative
  • Develop credit card arrangement for billing/payment for professional development 

Communicate regularly with Curriculum Administrators

  • Obtain input on professional development located in each district
  • Develop annual survey instrument to determine professional development needs
  • Develop instrument for evaluating Collaborative offerings and providing feedback to colleges
  • Meet regularly for sharing and presentation 

Establish multiple formal relationships with colleges for purposes of granting college credit

  • Establish credit arrangements with colleges-Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State, Salem State, UMASS-Boston
  • Establish reasonable fee structure for payment to colleges
  • Develop instrument for evaluating credit offerings and providing feedback to colleges

Establish formal relationships with proprietary course owners

  • Obtain approval to offer proprietary courses i.e., Wilson Reading, R.B.T. Courses, Orton-Gillingham, Linda Mood Bell Courses
  • Offer proprietary courses with college credit

Develop and offer wide range of courses, seminars, institutes

  • Utilize needs assessment
  • Compile list of high quality presenters
  • Develop, seminar outlines in conjunction with presenters
  • Utilize facilities of member districts to offer courses and seminars whenever possible

Develop and offer Superintendent/Curriculum Administrator approved collaborative sharing opportunities for member districts

  • Develop a model for collaborative sharing among job-a-like personnel
  • Meet regularly with Cape and Island Principals Group
  • Establish communication link between Curriculum Administrators and Administrators of Special Education
  • Provide support for Cape and Island Superintendent Group

Provide Licensure and Certification Programs where needed 

  • Implement In-District Elementary Professional Licensure Program
  • Coordinate Salem State CAGS Degree/Licensure Program in conjunction with Graduate Ctr.
  • Provide training for Paraprofessional leading to NCLB approval
  • Implement Paraprofessional test site at Collaborative Central Office
